Legislative Advocacy Center

Welcome to the IPRF Legislation and Advocacy Page

The IPRF Board strongly believes that it is their duty to inform and educate the IPRF members on legislative issues and concerns regarding workers’ compensation laws in Illinois. In order to do so, the IPRF Board has created this page for the primary purpose of providing to our members the information and resources they need to become effective legislative advocates to ensure that workers’ compensation laws in Illinois are fair and reasonable to our members and their employees.

Building Relationships

Effective legislative advocacy and lobbying on workers’ compensation issues begins with building a relationship with your legislators. Meeting with your legislators face-to-face is the most effective way to get your message across — and the best time to meet with them is when the legislature is not in session and they are in their home district offices. The legislative session is a busy time for them, so it is probable they will not be available to take your call or meet with you in person. If a legislator is unavailable to meet with you, you can meet with their staff. Having staff members on your side can be important, as they are required to be knowledgeable about many different issues and legislators rely on the opinions of their professional staff.

Letters, phone calls and emails are also good ways to contact your legislators — especially if made at the right time, with a sincere and heartfelt message.

Keeping Our Members Informed

From time to time, the IPRF Board of Directors will need to disseminate a legislative Call To Action Alert to the members or pass a letter of support to take a stand on a legislative issue. The “IPRF Legislative Call To Action” E-blast Alert system is a compact way to reach member’s attention on pertinent issues. Again, we will alert our members when we need legislative action with emails, calls or letters.

IPRF Legislative Watch List!

We’re finding plenty to keep an eye on in Illinois’s 100th General Assembly session. Each year, thousands of bills are introduced in the Illinois General Assembly and many of those bills could bear a huge impact on our members and the Fund.  And because of that potential impact, the IPRF Legislative Advocacy Committee and our Lobbyist reviews every bill for its potential effect.

Identifying bills that are either good or bad, the Committee will keep you up to date on the progress of those bills while working directly with elected officials to encourage passage or defeat.  And when applicable, IPRF will disseminate to our members Legislative Updates and when necessary, Call to Action Alerts.

IPRF is committed to keeping our Members up to date on the progress of our legislative priorities.  Every week during the Illinois General Assembly Session, we provide a snapshot of activities from the past week of Session with an update of bills being tracked (below).  As you review this information, we encourage you to provide feedback and questions by e-mailing Robert M. Buhs, Executive Director at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  And as always, IPRF members are encouraged to contact their state elected officials and let them know our position.
